Hakuhō: Calendar surimono (egoyomi) (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Ekigi Hakuhō
Title: Calendar surimono (egoyomi)
Date: Ca. late 1790s

A woman is cutting a picture calendar and holds a sheet which has the character “dai”, signifying the long months of year. The sheets in front of her have the numbers signifiying the long months printed in a very soft and fugitive purple, which can still be quite easily read. A pair of scissors lies next to them. A small child is pointing at the sheet as if he wants to play with it. A poem by Chigusa-an reads “beautiful petals of plum blossoms blooming on a nice branch though they are squeezed by a fence”.

It conveys the feeling of a budding new life. According to Roger Keyes this artist was active in the late 1790s and designed some color illustrations for poetry anthologies and a few surimono in a style close to the Tsutsumi school.
