Artist: Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891)
Title: Travelers in a Storm
Date: ca. 1900

Three travelers bend against the blowing wind and streaming rain of a storm. We see an entrance to a thatched hut that they must be heading for to the left. One man’s traveling hat has blown inside out, and his companion holds onto his hat and bends over, his cloak blowing horizontally from the wind. The young boy with them lacks a hat, and has lost a straw sandal on one foot while his right one disintegrates. Zeshin has managed both humor, pathos and drama in one scene; the safe shelter ahead even promises a happy ending. This example has superior printing to the example in Minneapolis.
