  • Sold.

Artist: Saitō Kiyoshi
Title: Gate, Enkaku-ji
Date: 1983

The essential form of the main gate (sanmon) of the Enkaku-ji temple floats in space, zenlike. Rebuilt in 1785, it is an Important Cultural Property of Kanagawa and has a roof covered in copper. Enkaku-ji is one of the most important Zen Buddhist temple complexes in Japan. Saito’s work from the 1980s is rarely found outside of Japan, as most of his works were at that time collected by the Japanese themselves. Note how Saito cropped the very right edges of the two rooflike elements. Numbered 78/130. This work was chosen as the cover design for Minoru Harada’s book “The life and Works of Kiyoshi Saito” (1990).
