Artist: Natori Shunsen 名取春仙
Title: Matsumoto Koshiro VII 代目松本幸四郎

Date: 1929
Arresting portrait of Matsumoto Koshiro VII as Ikyu. His snow-white beard and hair features blindprinting; it stands out against the deep grey mica background. In contrast is his dragon robe, printed in vibrant colors. He grasps the hilt of his sword and narrows his eyes in concentration. The scene is from the kabuki drama “Sukeroku: Flower of Edo” (Sukeroku: Yukari no Edo zakura). One of the artist’s finest kabuki designs, created with the unparalleled woodblock printing finesse of the early Showa period.
