Kiyochika: Sunset at Yanagishima (Sold)
Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Sunset at Yanagishima
Date: ca. 1878-79
A woman treads a path along a canal looking over towards the restaurant Hashimoto. The printing here is very experimental; most unusual is the woman, her baby and their garments, along with the clouds in the sky and the reflections in the water. Very rare. Henry Smith II notes how strongly the net pattern is evident in these places, and discusses the various theories of what western effects Kiyochika is trying to emulate; copperplate engraving, end-grain wood engraving and/or color lithography.
Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Some staining upper right corner.
