Title: Dawn at Kanda Myojin Shrine

“Dawn at Kanda Myôjin Shrine” (Kanda Yagumo Jinja akatsuki). Henry D. Smith II included this work in his catalog on the artist. He compares it with Hiroshige’s depiction of the same view from 1857 and has the following to say: “Kiyochika’s rendering of light is more elaborate and realisitc, relying on shadows that shimmer on the ground, highlights of the sunlight on the side of the tree, and a dark pocket of shadow to the far right that heightens the latent drama of the rising sun.” KIyochika’s depictions of light and darkness are the key to his enduring appeal.
Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Minor creasing and very light toning, as typical for these works.
