The actor Bandô Shuka I as O-Hatsu in the play Kagamiya Kokyo no Nishiki-e (The Women’s Chushingura). Here Kuniyoshi has taken the tack of showing the viewer the story as if watching it happen rather than the view from the audience at a kabuki theater. The scene is set; a sliver moon peeks through clouds above O-Hatsu, the loyal attendant to the court lady Onoe. She has been carrying a sealed letter box for her mistress, and here is the moment of truth where she discovers the contents; a sandal and her mistress’s suicide letter.
