Prince Morinaga is absorbed with reading a sutra, his single court attendant seated beside him. The Prince of the Great Pagoda was the son of the emperor Go-Daigo, and was imprisoned in a cave due to many layers of political intrigue in the 14th century. Here he is about to meet his fate, as an assassin approaches his cave, looking intent and malevolent. The wars between the rival courts continued until 1392. There is of course the Yoshitoshi diptych of Prince Morinaga reading the Lotus Sutra done several decades later.
