Title: Kanai Tanigorô Battles a Beast
Series: Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidô Road
Date: 6/1852

Kanai Tanigorô was a fictional character who was a wandering swordsman. Here is probably shown rescuing a lady from an attack by a many-toothed crocodile-like monster. The Japanese term for this fictional animal is a “mountain shark”. The drama is heightened by the sharp rocks and falling snow against a dark sky. The inset cartouche is shaped like a sword-guard, or tsuba.
