Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Title: Takeda Shingen Battle Triptych in Western Style
Date: 1852/6
Takeda Shingen (1521-73) fought with Uesugi Kenshin (1530-78) five times over Shinano Province during 1553-64. The 4th and the most fierce fighting started on August 14, 1561. Both sides declared victory. This triptych displays a very strong western influence--the clouds are done with an imitation engraving effect and the horses and the garments have a chiaroscuro-like effect.
Large battlefield between Kai Province (Takeda Shingen) and Echigo Province (Uesugi Kenshin) at Kawanakajima (Kôetsu Kawanakajima daigassen). Normally the Kawanakajima Battle in Shinano Province refers to the last day of their fourth battle. The battle ended September 10, 1561
