Title: Nighttime perspective deserted street with Frog, slug, snake
Date: 1852 (Rat 9)
A slug, a frog, and a snake in the foreground indicate the magical theme of this play. Behind the three main characters we see a shuttered street at night in strong perspective. Center is Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in the role of Jiraya, from the play Jiraiya goketsu monogatari. The three animals refer to the saying: "A toad is more powerful than a slug, a slug is more powerful than a snake, and a snake is more powerful than a toad. When all three meet none can be the victor. Such a relationship is called sansukumi (Triangular Balance of power).
