Three beauties are getting ready for New Year’s day. We see the New Year’s decorations in the tokonoma, along with a stroking ox and two battledores. There is also an image of a snake in the tokonoma, hinting that this may be the new year of the Snake, which would be 1833. One beauty, a towel on her arm, reaches into a tansu chest. Her hair looks like it has been tied up for the night. The middle beauty is seated at her makeup mirror, also in the process of getting ready. Next to her lies a white envelope of scents. The beauty on the right is in the process of changing her clothes. On the floor we see ehon with figures of actors on the front.

The ox is still resting on the cushions because its zodiac year is the following year.
