Title: Station Yokkaichi and Magical Mirage of the Palace of the Dragon King
Series: Suehiro goju-san tsugi (Folding-fan Fifty-Three Stages)
Date: 1865
We see a magical mirage of the underwater palace of the Dragon King appearing in a cloud in the sky, just above the two offerings of oversized sea bream that have been placed on the beach. The shogun’s procession has stopped on their journey to make this offering to the gods of the sea. It would seem that the Dragon King is quite pleased. One retainer is directing the gaze of his group up towards the mirage. All of the other designs of the 55 prints in this series are focused more on reportage of non-supernatural events. This series follows the shogun’s procession from Edo to Tokyo in 1863.
