Kunisada II: Snow Triptych with Prince Genji on Sugatami Bridge (SOLD)
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880)
Title: Prince Genji and Attendants on Sugatami Bridge during an Evening Snowstorm
Date: 1867
Prince Genji ("Mitsuuji") and three attendants are shown walking on high geta on Sugatami Bridge in the snow. Prince Genji has even deigned to help hold aloft his own umbrella, his hand on the handle beneath his female companion’s. She must be an attendant, as her clothing is too ordinary for her to be one of his (many) possible love interests. There was an obsession with “Rustic Genji” designs during this period, and the public could not get their fill of scenes of this ultimate playboy enjoying life in every pampered situation. The white lead application of snow has darkened in some areas with oxidation, and there is mica applied to the dark sky.
Condition: Excellent color. Very good impression and condition.
Dimensions: ôban triptych (36 x 75 cm)
