Koson 小原古邨 : Stonechat Bird with Flowering Hibiscus (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Ohara Koson (1877-1945)
Title: Stonechat with Flowering Hibiscus
Date: ca. 1910

A stonechat (Saxicola stejnegeri) clings to the thin branch of a flowering pink hibiscus (rosemallow, perhaps Hibiscus mutabilis), the bird’s gaze directed downwards. We can see its distinctive coloration of a dark head and wings with a rust-colored breast. This work is exceptionally well printed, and it has the feeling of a sumptuous painting. The branches seem to fade into the mist, and the leaves have many tonalities and numerous blocks to give them depth. The bird itself is very finely depicted. This seems to be a quite scarce design.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Mint.
