Koson 小原古邨 : Great Tit and Blooming Magnolia (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Great Tit and Blooming Magnolia
Date: Circa 1920s-30s

A bird faces the viewer head on, seeming to fix us with its gaze. It is perhaps a great tit or a Japanese tit. It perches on the branch of a flowering magnolia, which is beautifully printed with several stages of buds on the branch as well. Verso is the prewar “Made in Japan” seal that prints intended for export in the 1930s were required to bear. This indicates that this work was printed in the late 1920s or early-to-mid 1930s.
