Konen: Raft on River in the Rain

  • Sold.

Artist:  Uehara Konen (1878-1940)
Title: Log Raft in the Rain
Date: pre-1923

Tiny scene like a miniature window to the past. We see a boatman poling a log raft past traditional houses in the rain. He wears a straw raincoat; definitely a scene from an earlier century in Japan. Konen published most of his works with Kobayashi Bunshichi, whose shop was sadly destroyed in the 1923 earthquake. As mentioned in “The new wave”, this work is noted to be reminiscent of Hiroshige and was probably intended for export. Konen studied painting with Kajita Hanko and Matsumoto Fuko.
