Title: The Female Warrior Tomoe Gozen Hefting a Pine Tree Trunk
Series: Musha shochikubai ban tsuzuki (Warriors compared to Pine, Bamboo and Plum)
Date: ca. 1828

The famous female warrior Tomoe Gozen at the moment she wrenches the trunk of a pine tree from the grasp of her attacker, Wada noshinori. She later becomes the mother of the famous strongman Asahina no Saburô. Poems in the cartouche are by Seiyokan Umeyo and Umemaro.  The MFA has this complete set of prints. The background has been printed with bronze pigments and the armor contains areas of silver and blindprinting as well as black “lacquer.” With the collector’s seal of Werner Schindler and collector’s seal RB (?) verso.
