Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Title: Suwa Bluff, Nippori
Series: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo 五百羅漢つらね堂 (Meisho Edo Hyakkei)
Date: 1856
Cherry blossoms bloom abundantly, drawing visitors from Edo to Suwa Shrine and its famous bluff, where views of Mount Tsukuba at right and the Nikko mountain range may be seen in the distance. We see visitors enjoying the view from their platforms at a tea stand, and more visitors arriving as they ascend the bluff from below. A cluster of village roofs may be seen at right, and rice fields lie flat in the middle distance. Two large cedar trees dominate the design, creating a lovely focal point just above the horizon. A very early impression, with woodgrain evident in the sky and fields below.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Barely visible center fold.
Dimensions: ôban (36.5 x 24.6 cm)
