Hiroshige: Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Title: Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine
Series: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Meisho Edo Hyakkei
Date: 1858

This view is from today’s Ichigaya subway station, which is just outside Ichigaya gate, across the outer moat from what was then Edo Castle. We see Hachiman shrine rising to the right, with glimpses of the torii and red gate seen at the top of a set of steps. We see colorful “glove clouds” clinging almost mysteriously to the landscape, partially obscuring our view of the many tea tsalls that may be seen above the embankment. To the left wee see the watch tower of the Owari mansion, one of the estates of the Tokugawa family.

Condition:Very good impression, color and condition. Center fold.
