Hiroshige: Festival at Aki Province, Itsukushima (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige
Title: Festival at Aki Province, Itsukushima
Series: “60-odd Famous Views of the Provinces”
Date: 1853
Festival boats approach the famous torii at Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima.
The torii is strongly cropped, a hallmark of this artist and this series. The boat at right carries a float, and we see important local personages seated towards the bow. In the distance we see boats full of festivalgoers, lamps strung up along the the stays. Hiroshige has chosen to depict the torii as the most imposing feature, as it must have appeared in real life. Miyajima is one of the Three Famous Views of Japan. See “Hiroshige’s Journey in the 60-Odd Provinces” (2004), number 50.
