A semicircular view of the Sumida River from an elegant restaurant is presented to the viewer as perfectly as the impeccable dishes and flower arrangements would be to an physical patron. Like a periscope view from the Edo Period, we can feel the excitement of spring and the quickening heartbeat of a visitor en route to the Yoshiwara. We see the edge of an elegant camellia arrangement at left and the branches of flowering plum trees reaching into our view. We are on the second floor of a teahouse in front of Massaki Inari Shrine, a favorite shrine of the courtesans from the nearby Yoshiwara pleasure district. This artwork encapsulates everything exceptional about the design genius of Hiroshige, whose influence may still be felt today when it comes to art and design. There is beautiful woodgrain evident in the water and light touches of mica in the black bokashi at top.
