A traveler and his two companions are surprised if not awestruck when a local woman points out to them the significance of what must be a famous stone. The woman has put down her rake and basket, and the travelers include what looks to be a wealthy man and his two attendants. Ishibe was the 52nd  station on the Tokaido Road, close to the road’s terminus in Kyoto and eight miles west of Minaguchi. Hiroshige produced more than three dozen Tokaido series following the success of the Hoeido Tokaido in 1833. This one is known as the “Figure Tokaido” or the “Mankind’ Tokaido”, as the individuals feature prominently, rather than being background players to the landscape as with most of his other Tokaido series.
