The sun is setting on a spring day, the cherry trees blooming along the path to Azuma Shrine. The path begins lower left and continues through a stone torii and along a colonnade of shrine pennants until reaching the precincts of the shrine, hidden by trees at left. The tallest tree in the design, the giant camphor tree with the split trunk at left is the famous Entwined Camphor tree, which enshrines Princess Ototachibana’s sacrifice for Prince Yamato Takeru. In the Jukkenbawa Canal at bottom we see two small boats passing each other. In this design we see also Hiroshige’s penchant for zigzag sightlines, beautifully accomplished, as always.
