A turtle gazes out towards the river beyond, its front leg framing Mount Fuji. The turtle hangs from a wooden bucket and is being offered for sale to be released as part of a Buddhist tradition that believes that saving a life increases positive karma. Henry Smith says it best: “Perfectly poised between its closely framed little bucket-world and the river beyond, it seems an apt expression of late Edo itself, breaking out of its seclusion onto the stage of world history.”
