The proprietor of the Atagoya teahouse holds a giant rice paddle after performing the “Heaping Rice Ceremony” on the third day of the new year at Atago Shrine. He is dressed in a curious ensemble, including an upside-down basket for a hat, ornamented with a seasonal fruit and ferns. The kombu (kelp) he is draped with will be chopped up and distributed to attendees of the ceremony to ward off colds in the new year. Some scholars have commented that this might be a portrait of Hiroshige himself.
