A cuckoo flies in the misty rain on summer day, his movement echoing the red flag below, which represents an advertisement for a cosmetic. There is beautiful woodgrain in the sky and the location of the clouds differ on each print. The placement of the hototogisu above Komakata Hall would have brought to the viewer’s mind a famous love poem by the courtesan Takao.
