Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Ishinomaki in the Snow 石巻の暮雪

Series: Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition 東日本篇 東日本篇
Date: 1935

Quiet pervades this scene of waterside wooden buildings being softly blanketed with snow. As Narazaki wrote: “The tranquil evening snow has been skilfully designed, the painterly mood of the work is evinced in such elements as the two moored boats. The complex and sloped appearance of the snow-covered mountain in the upper right and the depiction of the dark distant mountain conveys a profoundly elegant mood.” Early editions like this one have a very soft palette, as would be experienced by someone there in person during a time of low light and falling snow. This may be considered the first edition of this work, with the Watanabe “D” seal that was in use between 1932 and 1941.
