Kikugawa Eizan: Surimono of Boys with banners (Sold)
Artist: Kikugawa Eizan
Title: Surimono of Boys with banners
Date: ca 1820s
A boy climbs on to the bow of a boat, while his companion carries a banner with the pattern of a small mallet of luck, kozuchi. At the stern of another boat flies another banner with Shôki, the Demon-Queller. The accompanying poem suggests that this print deals with a Boy’s Day Festival, where Shöki also serves as a symbol of strength. Eizan surimono are rare.
When Shôki was painted in red, it was understood as a protector or killer of an epidemic such as measles and smallpox during 1860s.
