Toshikata: Oversized Work showing Intrigue at the Japanese Court (Sold)
Artist: Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908)
Title: Oversized Work Dramatizing a Heian-Era Story
Date: ca. 1890s.
Unusual, oversized work showing a man in court robes and hat peering into a scene in an adjoining building. We see a woman in Heian Period garb helping an older samurai with an outer robe. He seems to be wearing armor beneath the cloak, so perhaps he is preparing for a dangerous, secret mission. The size of this work is larger than dai-oban, something that this dealer has never seen before in a work by this artist. Paper of this size was very difficult to print, and was rarely utilized prior to the 20th century.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
