Ishizaki Shigetoshi 石崎重利: Sailboat in Snowstorm (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Ishizaki Shigetoshi 石崎重利 (1901-1999)
Title: Sanuki Yashima
Date: 1937

Sanuki Yashima. Four men sail in a small wooden craft through a heavy snowstorm, with two more watercraft also seen sailing in the background. These must be fishermen, and we assume they are heading towards home due to the foul weather. The printing of the driving snow is striking, with translucent, large flakes coming down in gusts, printed with gofun. The waves are also beautifully rendered in a unique way. Sanuki city is on the Seto Inland Sea on the island of Shikoku. Shigetoshi was born in Aichi prefecture and studied with Hiratsuka Un’ichi. He was a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai from 1932, and contributed to the series One Hundred Views of New Japan in 1940. A beautifully printed, seldom-seen design that is a terrific example of the creative expression of the sosaku-hanga movement.
