Charles W. Bartlett: Kyoto (SOLD)
Artist: Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940)
Title: Kyoto Date: 1916
Taisho pedestrians cross a stone bridge in Kyoto, each one unique and based on keen observation. The artist has chosen an unusual viewpoint, as seven of the people have their backs to us, while only one woman, her bright orange parasol acting as a halo, approaches the viewer directly. Bartlett’s own pencil note on this design reads “No. 25/Kyoto Japan/ Pilgrims, peasants and Geisha girls. They cross the bridge––whither?” (A Printmaker in Paradise, page 118).
Published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1916, as one of Bartlett's ten scenes of Japan. Signed in graphite, lower left margin, with "CWB" and "Kyoto 1916" inscribed in rectangles in lower left corner of print. Watanabe's early round seal is in lower left corner of print. A scarce, pre-earthquake design.
