Saitō Kiyoshi: Maiko Kyoto (2) (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kiyoshi Saito
Title: Maiko Kyoto (2)
Date: ca. 1960s

Stylized view of a Maiko (an apprentice geisha), shown from a high perspective, her black hair with a cherry-red ornament making her white face and neck stand out. Her black kimono creates a circle of interest around her, and her obi is printed with the bold and beautiful pattern of the woodgrain. The backgoround is also an interesting texture, and her kimono is hemmed with an ochre color to give terrific contrast. Saito’s sophisticated stylization of forms is anything but simple.
