Obata: Silk Painting of a Mountain Stream in Yosemite (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Chiura Obata (1885-1975)
Title: Mountain Stream in Autumn, Yosemite
Date: Undated, ca. 1940s

Important painting of a Mountain Stream in Autumn, Yosemite, painted with hand-ground mineral pigments on silk. Recently discovered, this work was purchased directly from the artist in the 1950s by the current owner’s father. The deep browns and ochres communicate the feeling of autumn, and the playful, tumbling stream is depicted in Obata’s inimitable Modern style. This work feels more expressionist than most of the artist’s extant works, and it shows yet another dimension of this artist’s formidable artistic virtuosity. Large works like this that Obata had mounted on a wooden lattice in Japan do not ever seem to come to market. Provenance: From the collection of a personal family friend of Chiura Obata, purchased directly from the artist in the 1950s.

Coda: This work has been purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art and is now part of its permanent collection.
