Artist: Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) (1871-1945)
Title: Fujine 富士根
Date: Ca. 1929-32

Evocative evening scene of a bright yellow moon emerging through clouds over the flank of Mount Fuji. Several clusters of trees are silhouetted in the foreground while village homes are seen lit from within along the edge of the rice fields in the middle distance. This may be considered one of Hiroaki’s finest evening scenes, with layers of scenery that create depth even when there is only moonlight to see by. The view is from the town that was previously called Fujine village, which was merged into the city of Fujinomiya in 1955. Just beneath the moon we see the flank volcano, Mount Hôei, which emerged on the southeastern side of Mount Fuji as a result of the 1707-1708 eruption of the mountain.  These works published by Fusui Gabo are not often seen for sale, and this works seems notably scarce–another clue to its rarity is that this design is not listed in the Shimizu monograph on the artist.
