Title: Eye-popping Gore; Bloody Strike by Muramatsu Sendayu Takanao
Series: Genroku Yamato nishiki (Brocade of Japan in the Genroku Period)
Date: 1886

Yamato Warriors: Muramatsu Sandayu Takanao and Yanagihara Heiemon, from the story of the 47 Ronin (Chushingura). We are witnessing the very moment that Muramatsu Takanao has completed a stroke with his sword that has sliced off the face of his enemy. The explicit and literally eye-popping gore rivals that of his peer Yoshitoshi. On the ground lies the head of a man, and in the background we see a very expensive container lying spilled open on the ground. Spattered blood and soil have been applied by hand for realism. Beautifully printed, there is lead pigment in the grey sky and even touches of mica on the ronin’s black coat.
