Title: Ushiwaka and Benkei on Gojo Bridge
Date: 1881

Gojô Bridge, an Episode from the Life of Yoshitsune “Gikeiki gojobashi no zu”. From the personal collection of Yoshitoshi’s student Toshikata, a very early impression of this scarce triptych. There is woodgrain in the sky and traces of mica above the moon. Only Yoshitoshi could draw Benkei’s face so foreshortened and at the same time so fierce. His hands and the stance of his feet all convey his resolution and power. His opponent seems to float like a butterfly.

Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Some pigment transfer and slight trimming. With the large seal of Toshikata.
