Title: The Other Murasaki with Genji in the Provinces
Date: 1884
Here is a scene from the updated Tale of Genji (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) that was written in the 19th century and dramatized for the kabuki stage. We see Mitsuuji (as Genji) and the lady Tasogare taking shelter in an abandoned temple. Behind them are screens depicting Buddhist hell and paradise, and a pilgrim who is clutching his prayer beads. A figure has appeared wearing the mask of a jealous hannya she-devil, who acts out the role of the enraged ghost of Mitsuuji’s wife Futaba. Wafting smoke in the background drifts across all three prints. This print is technically superb in terms of the printing complexity and effects.
