Title: Humorous Scenes of an Unwelcome Embrace and a Guardian Figure Come to Life
Series: Comic Pictures of Famous Places amid the Civilization of Tokyo (Tokyo kaika kyôga meisho)
Date: 1881/1 (Meiji 14)
An unwelcome embrace, top and a guardian king coming alive, bottom. Top we see a woman putting on makeup, left, while a man is tackle-hugged from behind by another woman, perhaps trying to make him a customer by force. His bowler is on the floor, as well as what look like stacked dishes. The location seems to be the Shinmei Shrine in Shiba. Bottom we see the giant red Nio the Guardian King coming alive and following a diminutive golden figure of Benten during the famous year-end festival at Asakusa. The crowd of onlookers appear to be losing their minds with mirth. Nio carries a small basket with items that are perhaps a part of the festival. Paired uncut chuban prints.
