Yoshida 吉田博: The Grand Canyon (Sold)

Mid-day version of this design, with the colors accurately reflecting the view a person would see when the sun is overhead. (There is another version that reflects the colors of late afternoon.) The paintings/sketches for this work were made during Yoshida’s third trip to the US in 1923-24. 1925 was the year that Yoshida set up his own printmaking studio in his house and began translating the sights he had seen abroad into woodblock prints. The result was the United States series of six prints, and the Europe series of eleven prints. Prior to this, Yoshida’s prints were published by Watanabe Shozaburo, with the blocks sadly destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. This print was purchased in Japan in the late 1940s by a member of the US Office of Civilian Personnel, at a time when Yoshida was still giving woodblock printing demonstrations. It has never been framed.
