Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) 高橋松亭 弘明: Senbonhama Beach
Artist: Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) (1871-1945)
Title: Senbonhama Beach Date: Ca. 1929-32
Series: Mount Fuji in the Four Seasons (Shiki no Fuji)
Our view is from the shore, where several fishing boats have been pulled onto the beach, Mount Fuji rising gracefully in the background. There are no hints of industrialization, with traditional wooden boats, straw nets and no signs of even a motor. Even the the basket to hold the fish is woven of natural materials, and would be carried via poles. In the distance we see two fishermen, but they are tiny against the beautiful scenery. This work has many layers of visual interest and contrast, similar to a work by Hasui. Front to back, we see the foreground sand, the basket, the boats, the houses, the row of trees, the row of mountains, and then Fuji-san itself, backed by clouds and then sky. Mount Fuji rises against a subtly complex sky; perhaps it is sunset. This is from a rare series published by Fusui Gabo. Sealed Hanken shoyu Fusui Gabo hakko, right margin, with the title Senbonhama above.
