Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) 高橋松亭 弘明: Okabe Village in Snow (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei)
Title:  Okabe Village in Snow
Date:  1924-1927

Two komuso walk towards an inn at Okabe. Both wear the basket-type headwear worn by these mendicant Zen monks, and one carries his shakuhachi flute despite the blowing snow. The vermilion torii gate adds a beautiful contrast to the falling snow. In the distance village homes are seen, and in the middle is a snow-covered willow that dances in the breeze. Like many Hiroaki scenes, we could be seeing an image from 100 or 200 years earlier, as he preferred to depict a timeless, pre-industrial Japan in its full uniqueness.
