Oda Hironobu: Fishing on the Lake, Hamanako (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Oda Hironobu (1888-?)
Title: Fishing on the Lake, Hamanako
Date: ca. 1930s

Deep blue evening scene of fishermen on small wooden boats using bright fires to attract sealife at night. The overall atmosphere created by the deep blue palette is very effective, especially in the varying subtle colors of the water. Titled Hamanako Kaizutsuri (Fishing on Hamanako) upper right. This design is in the Robert O Muller collection, and shown in “The new wave.” The limited edition reverse reads Number 42 of a limited edition of 500. It is doubtful that the full edition was created, as this is a scarce design–the Muller example is numbered 44. Hamanako is located in western Shizuoka prefecture, and is unusual for being a brackish lake of mixed fresh and saltwater. Today it is something of a resort town.

Condition: Excellent impression and color; very good condition. Tape remnants upper verso.
