Artist: Nakazawa Hiromitsu (1874-1964)
Title: The Pagoda of Tennoji Temple (Tennoji to)

The Pagoda of Tennoji Temple rises above the temple precincts. In the foreground are stone lanterns as well as two pilgrims, dressed for the occasion. If this is the Tennoji Temple near Tokyo, there used to be a five-storied pagoda dating from 1908; it burned down in a love suicide in 1957.  If this is Shitennoji Temple in Osaka, the pagoda was destroyed by a typhoon in 1934 and was rebuilt in the 1960s. From the pre-earthquake album Nihon Taikan, published by Kanao Bunendo, which was printed to the highest standards in a way that captures the feeling of watercolors.
