Masao Maeda: Sunlit View of a Prewar Fishing Village (Sold)
Artist: Masao Maeda (1904-1974)
Title: Sunlit View of a Prewar Fishing Village
Date: 1939
“Gyoson” (Fishing Village) or Uomora. Oversized, bold and cheerful view of a fishing village as seen from a hillside on a sunny day. The modern world seems very far away in this timeless, prewar view. Maeda met the important sosaku hanga artist Hiratsuka Un’ichi in 1923, and eventually came to assist him in the Yoyogi-ha artists group in the 1930s. He contributed to other sosaku hanga groups as well during his career. Although the blocks were carved in 1939, it is difficult to date this example with precision.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Some tape remains on front margin and minor spots to margin.
Dimensions: 62.8 x 45.5 cm
Signed: Sealed with artist's seal, lower left
Literature: See LACMA for its example from the Felix Juda collection. This design is also in the collection of the Tokyo National Modern Art Museum in Ueno. See “Viewing Japanese Prints” online for an excellent discussion of the artist.
