Kiyochika: Suspension Bridge at the Imperial Palace (Sold)

Suspension Bridge at the Imperial Palace (Gojônai tsuribashi no zu). A couple in western dress look right towards two women in traditional Japanese garb. All are overshadowed by the enormous brick supports on the near side of the bridge. The figures and the cables cast conspicuous late-afternoon shadows. This print is unsigned, and attributed to Kiychika by most sources, although some attribute the work to his close student Yasuji. The Library of Congress assigns the work to Kiyochika, while the MFA to Yasuji and the Edo Tokyo Museum gives no attribution. It is clearly credited to Kiyochika in the publication Kiyochika + Yasuji (2012), plate 35. Also interesting to note is that Yasuji did create a small version of this view a few years later, which lends support to it being by the hand of Kiyochika.
