Kiyochika: Red Carp

Kiyochika: Red Carp (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Red Carp
Date: ca 1890s-early 1900s

Subtle and unusual design showing two red carp swimming in a glass bowl. The background is unusually abstracted and modern for a Kiyochika work. This almost looks like a print from the “sosaku hanga” movement, so one can surmise by the style and rarity that it was something of an experiment. Perhaps even Kiyochika tried his hand at self-carving, although it is impossible to say. The last works known to have been published by this publisher were in 1897.
