Kiyochika: Inari Shrine at Night (Sold)
Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Inari Shrine at Night
Date: 1877
Tarô Inari Shrine at Asakusa Ricefields (Asakusa tanpo Tarô Inari mae). It is worth quoting here from Henry Smith II: “...and after a final revival in 1867, the once famous Tarô Inari was by the late 1870s reduced to the state we see here--a lonely torii gate and some ramshackle buildings...This beautiful gray landscape, with the moon rising over the roofs of the city barely visible in the distance, may be taken as an elegy for Tarô Inari Shrine, to which references disappear after the early twentieth century. Not a trace remains today on the site at Iriya 2-12.” This is a very early example; it also comes in various color versions (such as with a purple horizon) that are not as effective in communicating the mood.
