Kunisada: Tea Stall at Station Hara (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Tea Stall at Station Hara
Series: “Fifty-three Parallels for the Tôkaidô Road”.
Date: 1863
A waitress brings two cups of tea to travellers taking a rest at station Hara on the Tokaido Road. We see a procession of retainers in the distance, perhaps the entourage of a daimyo. Mount Fuji is so large from this vantage point that the artists has extended the peak up beyond the margins of the print. Signed “Painted by seventy-eight year old Toyokuni”. Kunisada has done a reasonably good job here imitating the sweeping diagonals of the great landscape master Hiroshige.
