Upper Daigo-ji in Yamashiro Province, number 11 of the Sakoku Pilgrimage Route. 観音霊験記 西国巡礼 十一番 山城(やましろ)In this series, in the cartouche that mimics a picture frame supported by two padded hooks, Hiroshige II depicts the precinct of each temple that belongs to 34 temples of the Chihibu pilgrimage route. A waka poem which the pilgrim may chant is added to each picture. Below, the artist Kunisada depicts a scene from the legend related to the origin of each temple. Here we see the priest Shoho Sojo blowing on a conch shell horn, an attendant who holds a large axe kneeling nearby.
